Thought you might enjoy seeing the weird ways i contort my body while photographing people.  I will say this: my yoga comes in handy.

Also, I am announcing the dates for the third SEEING class!
This one will start on Saturday April 2nd.  It's an eight week experience where we meet twice as a group and twice in one-on-one private mentoring sessions.

I have a special change happening with this class: the whole thing will be held at the Pink House.

I did the first class at an art gallery, the second class at a cool hip loft, and am realizing that it's just not me.  I wanted to be more authentic to who I am and how I work, so I decided to invite you guys into my home studio.  I want to show you exactly how to make the most ordinary spaces look interesting and bright and lovely.  Yes, art galleries and lofts are cool..... but what happens when you get back to your house which probably... isn't as cool?  I think that this will inspire you to go home and do the same thing in your own space.  So.  Want to come over?  Want an experience that will help you tap into your own unique vision and learn how to see light?  Want to expand your way of seeing your world?  Sign up here.  There are 7 spots available, and only 5 left.

Here are the photos i took of everyone while we were learning about portraits.  I believe that the best way to learn about photographing people is to experience what it's like to be in front of the camera.  It's nerve-wracking, which is exactly why it helps!  You need to know what you're doing to other people when you're the one with the camera.  You know?  So, these are the images I took of each person as I explained exactly how my eyes were seeing each lighting situation.

this week has included many things, including:

-- my first ballet class.  as i put on my facebook, i felt like a little flower.  that's the only thing i could think of while walking to my car after class was done.  i felt like i blossomed, or something.  i ALSO felt like a freshman in high school trying to navigate the halls of Pasadena City College.  that place is big.  i love my teacher.  she is exactly what you'd imagine a ballet teacher to be.  big black curly hair, accent, & adorable. hi Ms. Pell!

-- a photo session of myself by tara whitney.  she made me feel so pretty.  my photos up at the top of this blog are not feeling like me anymore.  i needed new.  tara and i share an obsession with letting the raw edges show.  seeing the real.  i love her love for simple.  she was the only one i wanted to do these new photos.  it was perfect.  we went to nordstrom rack afterward.  dream date!

-- planning my 3rd SEEING class! i will be doing a post about that next! 6 spots left.

-- searching the internet for hours upon hours for a new rug.  i think i have a hard time envisioning things i see online in real life.  i need the real.  i have a hunch i will hate whatever i buy.  this could be a long process.

-- going to yoga after not going for a few weeks.  totally needed that.

-- indian food with my friend jess in south pas! we love being locals.

-- and, lastly, hanging with my little (almost said lover.  would you think i'm nuts?),

#1 I can't wait to see your new photos by Tara! It might seem vain to enjoy photos of ourselves, but I find them fascinating. Mostly because I don't look at myself very often and we are always the ones behind the camera not infront of it right?

#2 You can call Cosmo your lover if you want... Linda {{{The bird trainer thats been helping me out }}} says that the birds see us as being their mates. Plus, everyone loves their pets so its understandable :)

Choosing images is sometimes hard.

In my work, i normally force myself to keep editing down my image choices: shaving off the ones that just don't do anything to my heart.  Today though, i surprised myself by being indecisive.  I want them all in.  So here are 4 pairs.  I like the shifts that happen with each set.  And the white!  And, surprisingly, I think I like using capitals.

My favorite colors have said a lot about me.
They change often.
I wrote about them in this interview and was inspired to dig deeper.
In high school i adored black, white and red. I had a red room with black & white stars everywhere.  If stars were a color, those would have been my favorite too.
Then in college, my favorite changed to grey.  Very symbolic for me.  Embracing the in-betweens and the processes of life that couldn't be put into one specific box.
Next came orange I think.  I liked the zing.
Next was WHITE.  I'm still in the white phase, for sure, but hot pink has been added in.  Coral.  That peachy bright pink that is essentially neon.  I'm obsessed with it.  I have so many shirts right now that are the exact same color.  I used to have about 20 grey shirts.  I hope to soon have that many coral options.
I am still sitting in the pink theme, wondering what it means.
Words that come to mind: feminine, different, bright.

love the symbolic stages of life

(02.23.11 @ 12:58 AM)
Otheous L'Estrange says:

You know, it was not till the early 20th C that pink became a feminine colour. It was, as late as Edwardian England and mid-war years Germany, a colour for boys -- it was seen as a vibrant, dominating colour too dangerous for young girls to be dressed in. For them, the calm and dulcet tones of blue were preferred, lest they become too masculine.

Two interesting things I see in this:
1) Pink as feminine is a remarkably late-modern interpretation of the colour and the sex;
2) The understanding of personality as product of colour pallet should be taken more seriously than is often the case today.

(02.23.11 @ 06:18 AM)

I'm in the same coral pink stage. aaaand I totally just took photos of some of my fave coral pink things!

I love that you said your favorite color changes all the time. I totally relate to this. I went through a very "earth tone" (browns, greens) phase,.. my mom bought me a brown sweater for xmas and said "oh I know how you love brown". I haven't worn it yet. I hate to tell her I never wear brown anymore - and am in a "kelly green and grey" phase now. :)

I am so with you on this, Shannon! I think that some of us are definitely more affected emotionally and in other ways by color. Lately I cannot get enough of hot pink / pinky corals / muted purply-greiges and especially this bright chartreuse / yellow. LOVE!

Right now i'm teaching an eight week photography class for kids 12 and up.
I, LOVE, IT.
I love this!
Can't say it enough.
The class is held through my favorite gallery in Pasadena, SPACE. They have tons of workshops for both kids and adults.  I am also practicing typing in real capitals right now.  Proper sentences. It doesn't feel right but I'm experimenting.

Anyway.

We're on week 4 in the class, and I decided to take them to Chinatown to practice what we learned about documentary photography.  We took the Metro, loved our lives, took millions of pictures, and got boba at the end.  I brought my roommate with me to help keep everyone alive, and I wore my tennis shoes because I think I expected to be chasing children the whole time.  Nope, they're 13.  No chasing.

So! Just wanted to share :)

i call her dens.
we were RA's in college together!  the Max was our life.
learn about what i mean on my old blog which most of you have probably never seen before!
shannon from 5 years ago :)

anyway :)
denise and jason were so natural and fun.
just my style.
real & natural and comfortable and easygoing.
i loved being there!
i also got an entire glass of wine spilled on my face at this wedding.
it was like a waterfall in the air, and it happened to only land on me. on my head.
2 seconds after it happened was the first dance, so i ran and photographed it like nothing had happened.
except for the fact that i smelled like wine and had it all over my shirt and in my hair.
i think i pulled it off.
