i rented a car for the first time yesterday.
i had to pay $25 extra per day because of not being 25.
but since i'm now paying so much for this thing i've grown to love it. and there was something about renting a car on my own that was a small milestone for me.  being an adult, being free, getting out of my box.

i'm in minnesota for a few days for a photography workshop with jesh de rox but today was a day of wandering and sitting by a lake and drinking caribou coffee.
the trip started by seeing my friend rachel in the minneapolis airport-------- we had major celebrations and i hope people thought we were going crazy. because we were. her wedding is in a week in iowa, which is where i'm headed on friday!
traveling isn't my first choice of fun things to do, as i briefly mentioned a few weeks ago regarding my trip to the czech, but this has surprisingly proved to be relaxing and refreshing and inspiring so far. in my heart i want to experience everything really deeply, and i always leave trips feeling disconnected and disappointed. i realized that i needed an attitude shift: i'm now practicing receiving each experience and moment as enough.  trying to not want more. (its hard.)

as my plane landed i had a magical moment,
this song came on my ipod the second the wheels hit the ground.

just be by kristy hawkshaw & tiesto:
you can travel the world but you can't run away
from the person you are in your heart

okay God, i receive.

i have felt in a bit of a photographic rut for a few weeks.

i have work that i've done that i could show, but something about having to sort through images feels like too much.  something about having to choose what to show and what to write feels like too many decisions. i know that there is something within the sets of images i've done, i just dont know which path to take.  there are always so many options within one session- whether it be a wedding or a portrait session or a few photos of my lunch.  choosing something out of the mix would also mean clarity, and i feel like i am in a phase of gaining new clarity and direction in my work, so putting anything out in the world feels premature and exposing.  it would be kind of half baked.  although.............................. i do enjoy things like underbaked cookies, and lukewarm coffee, so maybe letting the raw edges show would be good.  who knows. i'm trying not to think about it too much.  i did want to let you know though, that my photography carries many ups and downs, many peaks and many valleys, many moments of extreme vision and others where i wish i knew what i was doing.  its not all slick and easy.  i'm so glad though, for being true to my seasons.  there was the dish season, the white season, the walk season, lots of seasons.  the next season for me feels like it might have to do with 1) people, and 2) with getting out of my box. and that's what i know for today.

there's a high possibility that the season might have something to do with,

cosmo really likes being by the window. he likes looking out.
i love how as a pet owner you can dictate what your pet does and doesnt like.
i'm realizing how much "cosmo likes _________" kind of actually means that i'm the one who likes it.

so..... i like cosmo being by the window. its magic.

the winner of the free spot in the SEEING class:::
LISA! we get to hang out this summer! i can't wait.

i feel so grateful for all of you who purchased prints for my czech trip.
guess how much i raised? $600!
who knew!
my thoughts all week revolved around these three words: people are NICE.

honestly.
to raise $600 in 4 days from a simple little print sale?
i am thankful for each of you.
your prints will be in the mail by friday.

i am away until thursday, relaxing and vacationing with my friend jill.  small breaks make for a happy me.  its funny though, because i am realizing that i miss cozzie when i'm gone. i said goodbye to him before i left.  i never would have guessed i'd ever be a pet person.  i miss a bird.  this is bizarre.

after our 8 week class at SPACE, i had the kids pick their top ten images to make into a portfolio.
i designed these little books and had them printed and bound at a local print shop.
on the last day of class, i took them through the process of creating an artist's statement.  essentially, a huge stream of conscious brainstorm.  letting all your thoughts be valid.  getting it out on paper.

i was honestly blown away at their finished products.
their parents even came and saw.

I love that you teach kids. I used to be a teacher and I now I substitute teach. I just love that you are encouraging them to be creative and to be proud of themselves.
There's an 11 year old girl that shows up to the photography club that I attend once a month. There are 85, 50+ year-olds that go this meeting and I am the "young" one (and you know how "young" I am!). This 11 year old girl is my sidekick during the evening. She brings me prints that she has made and gives them to me. I LOVE her! I love encouraging her. I wish I had picked up a camera at 11! I wish I had you as a teacher. :)

guess what?
i am going Czech Republic for two weeks to teach photography to kids!
i get to teach my SEEING classes at a summer camp over there.  i'm going with 10 people from my church this july.

a year ago when i started SEEING, i would have NEVER imagined myself teaching to kids.  the more i do it though, the more i am noticing the power this class has to open people up.  especially in a country like the czech, where the people there aren't as open or vulnerable, i think this class is going to be a really unique tool to help those kids blossom.  for me, art was the thing that really helped me access who i was deep inside.  it took someone coming alongside me and mentoring me.  that's what i love doing for other people, and i know it will be a life changing experience for the kids over in the czech.

the trip is going to cost $2300, and as a way of raising money i want to do two things.
1) sell fine art prints (starting at only $14)
2) give away a spot to this summer's SEEING class!! (worth $450)
* each print you buy is worth one entry toward the free spot in SEEING.

*** BUY PRINTS HERE!  (11 choices.... three of Cosmo!)
>>> the sale will only last until Friday.  all orders must be placed before friday at midnight PST.
>>> each order i receive will be automatically entered to win the free spot in SEEING.  if you end up not wanting to come to the class, you can let me know and i'll pick someone else. if you've already attended a previous class, you can either give your spot away, or have one free extra mentoring session.
>>> the prints will have a white border on them, because i think it looks the best that way. (below is an example of an 8x10)
IMG_0711.jpg

and: ideas of combos.
you could go the direction of white airy lovely,
0004.jpg0008.jpg

or there's always the stem/stripe/orange/bold,
0005.jpg
0006--yeah.jpg
i want to say thanks in advance for all of you who are going to help kids in the Czech learn more about the world through photography.  i will keep you updated on this........... including a post on why i dislike traveling but am going anyway :)

I'm trying to type with real capitalization these days because I feel like my typing isn't quite caught up to my current phase of life.

Things are feeling older lately.  I'm a whole 24 years old, everyone.  I love advertising my age. I love birthdays.  I love getting older.  I love getting better acquainted with who I am, and that comes with age.  FYI...... I know 24 is young.  But that's okay.  I was always that kid who sat at the adult table and listened to them talk about adult things.  I have always connected best with people older than me.

Every time I open my blog and see the picture at the top, I feel so small.  It was amazingly and perfectly me a few years ago when it was taken (Marlin Munoz!), but so much of my soul has grown since then, and that image no longer seems to fit.

I asked Tara Whitney to do some new photographs of me, which allowed us to finally meet in person after tweeting back and forth and commenting on each others blogs all the time.  Blogs facebook and twitter have nothing on real life.  She opened the door to her house and said IT'S YOU IN 3-D!

My favorite thing about HER in 3-D was her voice.  So much more whispery and feminine than I had expected.  Not like I sat around thinking about her voice beforehand.  Well....... ???

For these new images, I needed to see the me that was simultaneously rooted and flying.  I needed the quiet, centered me, as well as the shining me who is learning to trust herself more each day.

I just wanted the real me, today.

I'm now officially crying as I post this,
which just proves that yeah, she got it.

here's a few more on her blog, and some really good words.  she's good with words.  crap, i'm back to not using capitals.  I need a permanent reminder that life is a process, and its also a spiral.
