you know all those magazine articles that teach you how to organize?
i took three of them this weekend and did the steps.
i have been saving the articles for a long while.
i have also been collecting images on pinterest that i liked. finally used them instead of just being "inspired" by them.  ie: thinking about it and not doing it.
i also followed the steps on posts like this one and this one from my favorite blog, 3191.
the magazine articles are from the only magazine i subscribe to, whole living.  (actually, i also subscribe to blind spot. love that one.)

within the past few years i've had the goal of discovering rhythms that ring true to my spirit.

so here's my version of spring cleaning:
1. replaced all my dried flowers with living plants.  this was a piece of advice from the whole living article.
2.  got rid of books. some books are one-time reads. i got rid of those ones.  some books i just dont want to read but feel like i SHOULD read.  got rid of those.  some books were from college and i will never pick up on my own.  got rid of those.  i also used to buy old books just because they were old. got rid of those.
3.  i have lots of crap. i got rid of all of it.  vague, but not vague.
4,  i've been cleansing my closet slowly, so i didnt have many clothes to give away, but i did find one thing to give to my sister.  i love having a minimum amount of clothes and wearing things over and over.
5.  made some new file folders and filed things away.
6.  got a few things at ikea to help.
7.  rearranged the living room 3 times until it felt right.
8.  sold things on craigslist.  sent an email to my friends telling them i was giving away books.  dropped things off at goodwill.

after this was done, i made things functional and meaningful.
-- highlighted things that i really loved by making them stand out on a shelf or whatever .
-- hid and put away things that i dont really love but need.
-- organized according to how i use things.
this means >>>> put the books i read every morning near the chair where i read.  put matches by the candles.  taped up things that inspire me near my desk instead of hiding them in a folder.  realized i had about 5 kinds of books and put them in their own sections. got rid of things that were there just for decoration to fill space.

so, now i feel really good.
i think the coolest part is actually having things surrounding me that are meaningful.
getting the filler-stuff out of there: the stuff i never use and am never going to touch.
i now have only what i care about.
it feels so refreshing.

* making color spectrums with books makes me feel bizarrely satisfied.

p.s., i need to tell you that this was really hard.  it was emotional to let go of things that i once was really into.  like my wooden box coffee table that looked like a coffin.  i loved that thing.  but it was time for something new.  and yeah i might 'need' it 'one day', but if that day comes i'll find something new that fits me in that phase.  so yeah.  throwing away old crap isn't exactly fun, but it's freeing.

i am so inspired by simplicity and minimalism, so i loved this post.. thank you!! i moved away from LA last fall and have now been living with 30 or so boxes worth of stuff packed away.. love realizing that we don't need all that we surround ourselves with. will definitely look back at this post once we move into a house and our ultimate organization project begins! :)

My friend Rosanna lives in Scotland right now.  Each week we send each other a postcard with little updates.  Well....its bigger than just updates.  It's True Confessions.  For example: if I was to confess something right now I'd tell you that I got a ten dollar haircut and its not so hot. They cut a whole section out of the right side.  Bad.

So-------the other day, instead of a postcard, her TC's came written on a brie box which had some coral colored nail polish nested inside.

Can we say, friends forever?

i changed the location of his cage, which has some pros and cons.  instead of being right by my desk where i can stare at him while i work, its now by the table behind me.

pros,
+ the light is seriously golden at all times.  it is magical. i get to stare at him during breakfast and lunch and dinner which is really lovely.
+ he doesnt seem as attached to the cage. he's been more willing to explore.  i thought the new location would produce fear, but instead it got him out of his box just a little bit more.

i had this whole pro con list planned, but just realized how the change is what brought him to be more bold.  the change is what bought better light! (always a pro.)  and how scared am i of change?  in some areas i'm pretty bold.  in others it seems unthinkable to shift the way i do things.  but then when i have changed things.......... its often  been good.

i think i need some revamping in my weekly rhythm.  i need to give more time to pursuing things with my own art.  i have dreams to make books.  but have i ever made books before? nope.  change.  i need to start a change club.  who wants in?

I just learned that I'm into the 70's.

Sometimes i can be so unaware of styles, eras, what's in, what's out, who wrote that song, why that movie was important.... key info that most people think is obvious.  I have other strengths.  I am really good at recognizing fonts.  I can also make a really awesome strawberry cream cheese lemon zest pie.

So!  Didn't know I was into the 70's until i was in this couch store, picked out a new couch, and they said, "Oh--- so you want something mid-century modern?"  I froze. I wasn't sure what that exactly meant.

Time #2 where I realized this: picking out a coffee table. I had been searching for weeks.  I saw this one in a window and knew it was the one.  Walked in there and bought it on the spot.  "Yeah, this mid-century modern, 70's feel is really great isn't isn't it?"  TOTALLY.

All I knew was that I liked it.  I told one of my friends that apparently I'm into mid-century modern/70's stuff.  She said that she could have told me that 6 months ago.

Anyway.  Turns out I'm into the 70's, space age vibe.  The time when things were bold and colorful but also minimal and simple.  Wikipedia says that "glitter was in vogue".  Perfect.  Textures were in.  I'm into textures.  Velvet, sequins, satin, plastic.  Yummy.  My favorite part is the space-age part.  Perfect for someone whose favorite spot is the Griffith.  The only thing that I hate about the 70's is crop tops.  I have the longest torso ever, and this whole crop top thing that is in these days (I know something!) is killing me.

Want to know what my old coffee table situation looked like?

this week has included many things, including:

-- my first ballet class.  as i put on my facebook, i felt like a little flower.  that's the only thing i could think of while walking to my car after class was done.  i felt like i blossomed, or something.  i ALSO felt like a freshman in high school trying to navigate the halls of Pasadena City College.  that place is big.  i love my teacher.  she is exactly what you'd imagine a ballet teacher to be.  big black curly hair, accent, & adorable. hi Ms. Pell!

-- a photo session of myself by tara whitney.  she made me feel so pretty.  my photos up at the top of this blog are not feeling like me anymore.  i needed new.  tara and i share an obsession with letting the raw edges show.  seeing the real.  i love her love for simple.  she was the only one i wanted to do these new photos.  it was perfect.  we went to nordstrom rack afterward.  dream date!

-- planning my 3rd SEEING class! i will be doing a post about that next! 6 spots left.

-- searching the internet for hours upon hours for a new rug.  i think i have a hard time envisioning things i see online in real life.  i need the real.  i have a hunch i will hate whatever i buy.  this could be a long process.

-- going to yoga after not going for a few weeks.  totally needed that.

-- indian food with my friend jess in south pas! we love being locals.

-- and, lastly, hanging with my little (almost said lover.  would you think i'm nuts?),
