--- cosmo loves people. i just had my friend blaire over to my house, and he was so loud! tweeting up a storm. she just left, and now he's sleeping. made me jealous. am i not enough for you, cos???

--- i got a haircut yesterday and decided to part my bangs on the other side. LIFECHANGE.

--- i love my hair artist, lindsay. i go to ecco salon in south pas. she is one of the people coming to my classes. what!!!
--- my classes are SOLD OUT! so excited about the ten people who are coming.

--- i've been wearing my orange dress for two days because all my clothes are dirty (and to me that means...... sweaty to the point of embarrassment), and i dont have a washer and dryer. ohhh the pink house.

--- i've started doing tae-bo

--- is it really friday?

--- my house IS A MESS RIGHT NOW.

--- true confession: i'm on twitter. true confession: i didn't know how to see my @replies until yesterday.

--- i also started a facebook page. why? because i wanted a place to post whole sessions for my clients. the world is connected through facebook. everyone wants their wedding photos on facebook. so! that's going to be my new way to help them. also, i started a section to share recipes. why not. check it out here :)

--- i am so interested in why i am drawn to take photos of the dishes. easy answer: they're colorful! deeper answer: still working on that.

going to get some frozen yogurt.

last time i got too much and felt sick for hours.

p.s., whats your perspective on using photoshop to take out actual DIRT in your photos? see that 2nd dish photo.... bottom left.... that's actual dirt. not on my lens, on the dish rack. do i photoshop it out? i'm thinking leave it.

a few days ago i decided to part my hair differently as well (i had a side part, but it was pretty close to the middle, so i parted it even farther side). it's like i have a whole different hair cut. love it.

and about the dirt...i saw leave it. i didn't even see it until you mentioned it, and even then i really had to hunt for it.

Hi Shannon, still moving into our new home and it's amazing! You mentioned DIRT - think of cleaning up someone else's dirt for days and days. The last owners didn't clean much. I will probably make everything really clean and then ease up about the cleaning thing.

It took me a second to realize why I liked this part so much, and this is what I came up with: There's this mystery in it and I like that. I like that you take the picture, not really sure what it is about the dishes that you love. I think I didn't realize that even little pictures like that are such a learning/processing/insightful thing for you. That makes me happy. I like you more and more.

Weeks 2-4 are one-hour private sessions at my home studio (the pink house!) in South Pasadena. You will sign up for your own weekly slots for the weeks of 9/27, 10/4 and 10/11. These can also easily be done over the phone if you live out of the area.

i am becoming really passionate about this kitchen & dish series that i've been doing for the past year or so. i've been posting them on here now and then.... and am slowly realizing that there's something here to pay more attention to. the series is going to become my next body of work that i frame. i got some test prints the other day----- 16x24"----------- and i screamed when i opened the box. there's a spirit to these images that just gets me. these say shannon to me, but in a way i didn't know really existed. so. this is now my new thing.

favorite part about this one....... the water marks on the french press. the glories of hand-washing your dishes in southern california's hard water,

and i figured out that 4pm is magic in my kitchen.

....its crazy to me that all of these are from the same 10 minute span of time, from the exact same mix of dishes just sitting on the counter. they all feel like they're from opposite ends of the universe. this is a good example of my best photo trick: move around a lot.

so i hope today is a really good day for you.

While you are having fun working in your kitchen, I'm having fun in my NEW kitchen! Come take pictures of it - I'm getting out things from storage that I haven't seen for 10 years!!!! Now that's about as fun as it gets. Two sets of dishes that I remember enjoying to join the two sets that Caol left for me. Mine are better - hehehe

the artist is a cartographer.

he maps the world.

this is my world this week. our floor in our kitchen is getting re-done.

what i love about it is that all they're doing is removing the old linoleum and refinishing the wood floors that were underneath.

work with what you've got.

accept what you have.

creatively see what's in front of you with your own unique eyes.

it was hard to sit down and breathe this week because a) southern california is 100 degrees, b) i didnt own an air conditioner until yesterday, and c) life feels mixed up and not normal with our whole kitchen in our living room while the floor is being done.

i enjoyed peeking in through the plastic temporary door and documenting our house as it was today.

i normally expose for the midtones and shadows to make my images bright, which ends up leaving blindingly white areas, but while photographing this today i asked myself why i dont let the shadows in. the mystery. the darks. they draw me in but also make me uncomfortable. doesn't feel connected to me and the way i see. but i think i needed to pay attention to that and ask why. in the photograph below i'm in the same place as that one above, just about 2 steps back and vertical. crazy how there's a million ways to see the same space. the same world.
